Ganderbal/Gujjar Medical Camp

19 July

The Ganderbal camp was conducted among Gujjars in a village north of Srinagar.  Generally, the Kashmir area has better government health facilities in rural areas due to the higher economic and education standards of Kashmiris (due to cultural reasons and due to higher quality soil and better rainfall in Kashmir), and also due to the fact that Kashmiris dominate J&K State politics, and devote much of the government money and attention to these areas.

The camp was conducted with the help of a team of young physicians, who were socially-minded friends of each other who I had met through another Kashmiri doctor-friend, Dr. Ajaz Bulbul.  This camp had an excellent stock of medicines, and the first 250-patients received top-class treatment.  However, a total of 400 patient eventually arrived, and this overwhelmed our stocks.

One of the doctors with some young Gujjar patients.  The actualy consultations took place inside a village community hall, but some patients lingered after the camp as we were leaving.
